The Center for Human Rights (CHR) of Addis Ababa University (AAU) was founded in 2008 and is currently organized under the College of Law and Governance Studies. CHR generally seeks to advance human rights, rule of law, and democratic governance in Ethiopia through high-end research, teaching, and community services. As part of its objectives of providing quality academic, research, and community services, CHR, in collaboration with the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), is implementing a three-year project to support its teaching, research, and community services. For the implementation of this Project and its three components [Multidisciplinary Human Rights Teaching and Training; Research, Policy and Practice Collaboration and Diffusion; Community Based Human Rights Promotion and Protection]; the Center would like to hire motivated, competent, and high-caliber professionals. The Project implementation covers the Center as well as 5 sub-project areas in Addis Ababa, Adama, Hawassa, Ambo, and Debre Birhan. Hence, the Center is looking for qualified professionals for the job openings listed below. 

1. Executive Assistant to Lead Coordinator (PEA I)

Place of Work: Addis Ababa

Summary of major duties

  • Assist the Lead Coordinator in overseeing the implementation of the Project;
  • Assist in the coordination of all project activities;
  • Assist the Lead Coordinator in the supervision of project staff in all project sites including the main project coordination office;
  • Undertake the preparation of regular supervisory sub-project planning and reporting meetings and other engagements to ensure the timely and effective implementation of all project activities;
  • Ensure Project Coordinators provide necessary work plans and performance reports with the desired quality;
  • Ensure quality of services in all Project components;
  • Undertake regular project staff appraisal
  • Act on behalf of the Lead Coordinator in the latter’s absence;
  • Promote the values of CHR including respect for human rights, gender equality, tolerance, transparency, and constructive engagement with all partners and stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties as may be required.

Qualification

  • Minimum of first degree in law or related social science fields of study;
  • Master’s degree in human rights;
  • Work experience in human rights and university-affiliated projects is a plus;
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience for MA/LLM and 8 years experience for BA/LLB degree holders;
  • Experience in project management and leadership is an added advantage.

2. Sub-Project  Coordinator (PPC I)

Place of Work: Addis Ababa

Summary of major duties

  • Coordinate activities falling under the ‘Multidisciplinary Human Rights Education and Training & Research, Policy and Practical Collaboration and Diffusion’ sub-projects;
  • Coordinate the design and development of curriculum, textbook, and manuals and carry out related activities;
  • Plan and coordinate academic training and education activities of the Sub-Project;
  • Coordinate the organization of policy dialogue forums on strategic themes, facilitate research activities; collect and organize research and information on human rights; organize experience-sharing workshops; hosting international researchers and students;
  • Prepare quarterly, biannual and annual plans in collaboration with Sub-Projects and other project staff assigned;
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, biannual and annual reports regarding the Sub-Projects and submit them to Lead Coordinator;
  • Ensure that planned activities are carried out in accordance with the plan and within the agreed time frame;
  • Oversee and supervise the quality of trainings, workshops, policy dialogues, research activities, academic conferences and other activities provided under the Sub-Projects;
  • Supervise project employees within the Sub-Projects;
  • Promote the values of CHR including respect for human rights, gender equality, tolerance, transparency, and constructive engagement with all partners and stakeholders.

  • Minimum Bachelor’s in Law or related social science fields
  • Masters in human rights and other related fields;
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience for MA/LLM and 8 years experience for BA/LLB degree holders;
  • Multidisciplinary educational background is a plus;
  • Experience working in projects in an academic setting and with similar objectives will be an added advantage;
  • Experience in report writing;
  • Excellent command of English and Amharic.

3. Training Courses Coordination Officer (PTC-II)

Summary of major duties

  • Facilitate the development and launching of new post-graduate level training;
  • Facilitate and coordinate the production of training materials for

  • Design and organize specialized training courses on human rights issues identified in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
  • Assist in the facilitation of trainings under the sub-project;

4.  Policy Collaboration and Diffusion Officer (PPDC II)

Summary of major duties

  • Planning, organization, and implementation of policy dialogue forums;
  • Ensure the preparation of dialogue forum reports, policy briefs, and other pertinent documents and undertake follow-up activities post-policy dialogue forum;
  • Organize networking and experience-sharing workshops;
  • Prepare quarterly and annual work plans, narrative, and financial performance reports of the sub-project
  • Prepare monthly activity plans and execute them in consultation with the sub-project coordinator;
  • Facilitate and coordinate the organization of policy dialogue forums for federal, regional, and local government officials, and civil societies;
  • Facilitate and oversee logistical arrangements for relevant meetings and workshops;

5.  Research Officer (PPR II)

Summary of major duties

  • Assist in the identification of research issues, and topics related to the Project implementation;
  • Develop concept notes and ToRs related to research activities;
  • Coordinate and assist research activities under the Project;
  • Preparation and compilation of materials on methods and tools useful for research, particularly for empirical research;
  • Collect and document manuals, guidelines, resource materials, and researches on human rights in general and on topics specific to the project;

  • Assist the activities of research groups, editors, and other experts involved in research activities;

6.  Sub-Project Manager  (PPM I)

Place of Work: Addis Ababa

Summary of major duties

  • Assist the Center in the implementation of the Community Based Human Rights Promotion and Protection’ sub-Project;
  • Plan, implement and manage the sub-project activities;
  • In consultation with finance and admin staff, ensure that funds are spent and accounted for in the sub-Project planned activities;
  • Lead the day-to-day activities of the sub-Project by coordinating project area managers;
  • In consultation with finance and procurement officers, prepare, as required, monthly, quarterly and annual plans with the budget, submit for approval, and ensure implementation once approved;
  • Monitor areas office staff and ensure the services in project sites are implemented smoothly;

  • Support the Sub-Project manager in connection with training components of the Sub-Project;

  • Ensure the [sub] project activities are documented and publicized, including using the internet;
