Our History

The Center for Human Rights, Addis Abba University, was established in 2008 to promote the multidisciplinary study of human rights within the Addis Ababa University system. The Center is one of the leading human rights Academic Institutions in Ethiopia that has been engaged in multidisciplinary human rights teaching, research, and community service.

It has been offering MA and Ph.D. programs in Human Rights. As part of its mandate to provide community services, the Center has been providing free legal aid services to those who cannot afford to pay for such services through its Access to Justice and Project STRACE (Project to Support the Human Rights Teaching, Research, and Community Engagement).

In all its activities, the CHR has aimed at institutionalizing a culture of human rights in Ethiopia by addressing gaps and challenges.


The Center’s mission is to the primacy of human rights and freedoms found in the Ethiopian Constitution and international/regional human rights principles and standards, through high-end multidisciplinary teaching, research, and community engagements to protect, fulfill, and promote rights and freedoms, particularly of those that are marginalized, disadvantaged and vulnerable section of society. 


The Center envisions a just, democratic and prosperous society that upholds principles of human rights and freedoms and that recognizes and protects the human rights of all, equality and with no distinction, especially of the disadvantaged and vulnerable to participate in sustainable prosperity.
